Welcome to the Vice Presidential Discussion Forum |
|
Interest in this debate is running high all over the country. The number of voters registered, difficult times economically and internationally, the first woman named a vice presidential candidate by Republicans, the first African American nominated to the top of a party's ticket and the oldest American ever nominated, all are drawing the attention of American citizens of all stripes.
Welcome to this debate. I look forward to a vigorous discussion.
With your first posting, would you please declare if you are backing or leaning toward backing any party's presidential-vice presidential ticket. Also, if you are undecided, let us know. I would appreciate it if those who participate will help us wrap up afterward with overall impressions of the debate. For those who might still be undecided, I think it would be interesting to know if the debate swayed your opinion.
Just some housekeeping tips: don't forget to refresh. Also, you can change the subject after you hit reply and that will allow a new thread to start. That also helps to keep threads alive in case a flame war does erupt and I have to delete a comment. So far, I can only delete a whole thread, not just an individual reply.
Have fun, debate intensely, and keep it moving according to the debate topics as the questions come up.

First Question, the bailout |
|
Best or worst of Washington?
Biden points out differences between how Bush-McCain-Palin act on the economy, and talks about differences in how to handle, the need for regulation and protecting the middle class.
She talks about fear of failing markets among those who have managed to invest something.

Palin needs to stop simply reguritating her rehearsed talking points and actually answer a question.

Definitely Biden's plan. I don't know how the small businesses in America will be able to afford to offer health care insurance to their employee's under the Republican's plan.

Good point. This debate, I think, really shows the advantage that a governor has vs a senator because they have cast so many votes, it's hard to take votes on those huge omnibus bills and parse out specific positions.

Rehearsed debate? |
|
Concerned Mom, I think you are correct that she keeps driving her topic back to her rehearsed speeches. I don't know what you're watching this on, but I'm looking at CNN right now and the watchers using their interestometers or whatever they're called, really fall off when she starts that.
"I don't want to argue about the cause." Really weak.

I am watching CNN. I noticed that each time she mentions McCain's name the interestmeters fall off.

I agree we need to rely on domestic oil production, but we don't need to limit ourselves to conventional energy sources.

How can Sarah Palin sound so much like George Bush? Again she sounds way rehearsed and is not making statements that are on point.

Performance |
|
This was Biden's debate to lose. Palin had nowhere to go but up. I was concerned Biden would be viewed as too abrasive toward Palin. (She's much more delicate than Hillary.)
I think he's done a good job tonight, and Palin is simply coming across as too rehearsed.

I agree. I was afraid that Biden would come off as too restrained. She has held her own in terms of avoiding the deer in the headlights look, but all of the avoidance comes at the cost of seeming able to think on her feet.

Yes, also that Biden apologized for his vote. I think he could have called her on the against it before for it. That's a bad issue for her with the road to nowhere. And I am really not buying this extra folkiness, gosh darn it.

Role Reversal -VP Role |

Currently, I think the VP runs our country. Bush is a puppet. If McCain is elected, Palin will be a puppet.

Experience |
|
I have a difficult time believing that being the mayor of the town roughly the size of Bonham or Whitesboro qualifies you to be the VP of the US.
Also, let us not forget what happened the last time we sent a governor to DC. I would hardly call Alaska the heartland of America. She's the governor of a state with roughly the same population of Austin.

Again, I think Palin had nowhere to go but up during this debate. Her folksy, Pollyanna rhetoric lacks substance. I think the viewers tonight saw her as overly coached and rehearsed. I question her ability to think fast on her feet and to think for herself.
